-glitter (optional)
-miniature wooden stump

Constructing pinecone elves for the village scene above  is fun for kids on a winter afternoon—just be sure to use craft glue instead of hot glue for safety if young children are involved. If you use craft glue, a longer drying time will be required before figures are stable. Begin by gathering all materials. You can use whatever pinecones you have available; to reconstruct ours, you’ll need the following: Eastern Scotch pinecone for the body of the old elf; mugo pinecones for bodies of girl and boy elves; the top of an Eastern Mountain “Star” hemlock for the girl’s hat and reindeer’s head; a red spruce pinecone for the reindeer body; and scales of longleaf pinecone for reindeer legs. You’ll also need an acorn top for the boy’s hat.

To make the old elf, begin by shaping pipe cleaners into arms and legs and cutting a strip of white chenille pipe cleaner for his beard. For eyes and mouth, attach tiny black seed beads to his wooden-bead head (holes facing sides) with white glue. Also use seed beads to make faces of other figures.

To make the old elf’s hat, spiral a red metallic pipe cleaner into a cone shape by wrapping it around your little finger. Attach hat and beard to the bead head by pushing them into the holes on the sides of the wooden bead. For boy, girl, and
reindeer, attach hair, hats, and antlers to heads with hot glue.

Arms and legs for the elves are simply pushed into the pinecone bodies to secure; the four legs of the reindeer should be hotglued in place. For each of the characters, the heads should be hot-glued to the bodies. A small wooden stump
will make a perfect seat for the old elf (you don’t have to attach it to him); in his hand put an even tinier pinecone.
